Assessor Fritz Kaegi on Tax Sale Court Ruling: “Families Should Be Getting Relief”
Assessor Kaegi applauds ruling, calls on lawmakers in Springfield to make families whole and pass circuit breaker legislation to protect homeowners
Chicago — This week, a federal judge ruled that Cook County’s tax sale system is unconstitutional. The case involves roughly 2,500 homeowners who lost their homes and equity after they fell behind on their tax bills. In response to the court ruling, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi released the following statement:
"This is a predatory system that robs families of their home equity, so I'm happy to see the courts shoot it down. When a family falls behind on their tax bill, we should be getting them relief, not selling them out to private firms looking to profit at their expense," said Assessor Fritz Kaegi. “We need lawmakers in Springfield to pass the "circuit breaker" property tax relief bill I've been pushing for, and we need them to pass the Treasurer's proposal to give these families their money back.”
